This is a huge topic… It’s hard to talk about it without going off topic. So to prepare your images youll need to paste each of them into a new image of the appropriate (combined) size. Blend collage will blend photo quickly using a blend. However, to use blend, image1 and image2 must be the same size. Cut your photo into any shape or Free form with cut paste tool. Fotor offers you a user-friendly image blending editor. That should be true with 16 bits to some extent as well, even though 16 bits is a lot more. PIL has a blend function which combines two RGB images with a fixed alpha: out image1 (1.0 - alpha) + image2 alpha. Fotors photo blender makes it simple to overlay images online to create a surreal picture in no time. We see dark tones better - more of the dynamic range we see is dark so if the data is saved linearly and only 8 bits are saved, we loose information that we see best, but it includes information that we don’t distinguish well, so when an 8 bit linear image is converted to the color space of some display we are viewing it on(sRGB mostly), the image looses a lot of quality. Information in 8 bits is not usually saved in linear values(it can be, but that would not be a good idea in most cases), instead it is saved according to the way human eyes work(sRGB, gamma 2.2 and so on…). And on top of that OpenEXR format is just amazing as well - see: and It supports Cryptomatte and you can use it in Photoshop! That alone saves me hundreds of hours of work literally. When I render a scene inside of blender (currently using 2.69) the image looks fine on the render screen inside of blender. It is a way to save the whole data that render process generates unchanged. Also you can do color grading outside Blender with the whole data coming out of the render process even though 16 bits should also be really enough for that in vast majority of cases. I imported an 'image as planes in Cycles and am getting a washed out/lighter version of the original. Render passes cannot go through any color transforms for them to work properly - they need to be linear values and only after compositing to go through color transforms so you would run into issues if you did it with other formats or lower bit depth. You get a whole lot more data with 32 bits for editing to avoid quality loss with extreme edits(not many tools to do that though) as well as possibility to externally do compositing with render passes.
